Student Policy

A. General

1. The Academic Computing Center (ACC) serves students from all disciplines. Students are encouraged to use technology to complete their Santa Ana College assignments.
2. Students using the ACC must adhere to all Rancho Santiago Community College District, Santa Ana College and ACC policies.
3. In this document the term “instructional staff” refers to the ACC instructional and student assistants wearing red or blue vests in the Center.

B. Who may use the ACC?

Any currently enrolled student in the Rancho Santiago Community College District with a current, valid student number may use the Academic Computer Center to do college assignments. Non-students, which includes children, are prohibited from being in the Academic Computing Center.

C. Academic Computing Center access procedure

1. Register for a RSCCD college course(s).
2. Give your college ID or college student number to the Center personnel at the entrance of the ACC.
3. The ACC staff will put the student ID or student number through the ACC scanner to verify current enrollment status.
4. The student who wishes to use his student number must write their number and name on a slip of paper. An assistant will enter the number by hand into the computer. If the student’s name appears on the check-in computer’s screen, the assistant will check to make sure it is the same as the name that was written. To facilitate entry and exit, students are encouraged to use a college ID.
5. After verification, the student will be allowed to enter the Center.
6. Due to security concerns, there are absolutely no exceptions to these rules!

• Students are asked to find other accommodations for their children when they visit the Center. Friends of students who are not registered students in the district are not allowed in the Center.
• The ACC Staff Support Area is for RSCCD staff only. Students may use this area if they are supervised by an instructor while doing college work for the instructor.

7. If all computers are taken, you will have to sign the waiting list. Names will be announced when a computer becomes available in the order they were received.

D. Checking out materials

1. The instructional staff at the front counter will help the student fill out the necessary forms to check out materials such as a headphone or floppy disk drive.
2. The student must leave his student or picture ID as collateral until the loaned materials are returned.
3. Materials can only be used while the student is in the Center, and must be returned when the student leaves.
4. Materials must be returned in the same condition as when they were checked out.
5. Students who do not return checked out items will have a hold placed on their registration and transcripts until the checked out items are returned.

E. Maintaining an environment which fosters learning

1. Food, drinks, and smoking are absolutely prohibited in the Center.
2. In order for all students to do their work effectively, students must avoid unnecessary noise. The use of cell phones is prohibited.
3. The use of a headphone is required when using a multimedia-enabled program or CD/DVD.
4. In order to keep the Center tidy, students must deposit unwanted paper in a recycling container.
5. Students are required to be properly attired
(For example: Shirts and Shoes are
required).

F. Care of equipment and software

1. Report any problem with computers, printers, scanners, videoconferencing equipment, typewriters or software to the instructional staff at the front counter.
2. Students are not allowed to fix, alter or tamper with any ACC hardware or software.
3. Students are required to handle ACC equipment and software with care.

G. Procedure for using the equipment

1. After signing in, the “Program Location” notebook at the front counter can be used to find the computer with the program(s) you need.
2. If your instructor provides the Center with materials pertaining to your class, they can be found in the “Class Materials” notebook.
3. Next, the student may proceed directly to any open computer. If all computers are in use, sign the waiting list found at the front counter, and sit in the waiting area by the entrance door. The instructional staff will call students when it’s their turn to use a computer.
4. Bring all necessary academic materials including assignments, books and writing instruments.
5. Students are strongly encouraged to bring and use a high-density 3 ½” diskette, memory stick, zip disk (100 or 250 Megabytes) or CD-R to save their work.

• A student’s time and work are valuable. It is the student’s responsibility to save their work frequently, preferably on two media (2 diskettes or 2 zip disks or 2 memory sticks or 2 CD-Rs or any combination of 2 medias). If a student saves his work on our hard drive, their work may be lost, damaged or copied. It is the student’s responsibility to protect their work.
• Also, equipment time is at a premium. Since students often wait in line to use the Center, students using ACC equipment should take every precaution possible to avoid losing their work a second time.

6. Students should not leave their computer or personal items unattended at any time. The security of the student’s work and their belongings is the student’s responsibility.
7. When leaving, students must make sure:

• To take their academic materials and belongings including their floppy, CD, memory stick or zip disk with them. It is the student’s responsibility.
• To checkout at the counter before leaving. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up and make sure the ID card received is theirs.

8. Those students wishing to use the typewriter must bring all supplies including paper and “White Out.”

H. Using the software

1. Students may use any software available on an ACC student computer.
2. Students must scan each media, floppy, zip, memory stick, CD or DVD for viruses every time they use a computer in the ACC. This helps protect the student’s work and the work of others.
3. Anyone caught using a virus knowingly or unknowingly will be referred to the director of student services for appropriate action.
4. It is illegal to copy any software without written permission.
5. Unauthorized use of the network and system folders is prohibited.
6. Putting personal software on any computer is prohibited.
7. Ordering anything through the ACC computer is prohibited.

I. The role of the Academic Computing Center instructional staff

1. The instructional staff wear red or blue vests so they can easily be identified.
2. Students are requested to bring a copy of their assignments, handouts and textbooks with them so the instructional staff can more easily assist them.
3. Students should first attempt to solve their problems by checking the appropriate reference materials such as their book, handouts, manuals, online help, the Web and instructor notes.
4. Students, who have questions, may ask a member of the instructional staff for help by raising their hand.
5. The instructional staff will show students how to find the answer they are looking for. They will not do an assignment for a student.

J. Helpful information

1. Check the white boards, posted signs, and the computer you are using for important announcements.
2. Occasionally equipment is reserved for indoctrinating a class. This is often done to maximize the time the instructional staff has available to help students. Please be considerate during indoctrination of classes.
3. Check the ACC Web site: http://sacacc.sac.edu for information.

K. Using the printers

1. Students may use either the black and white or color laser printers.
2. Students must proof read their work before printing and use the “Print Preview command when it is available.
3. Students must go to the front desk to ask the instructional staff to release (print) their job.
4. Printing limits described below are set up to keep printing free and help facilitate student printing.
5. Check the ACC Web site under “Online Tutorials” for tips on how to get the most information while staying within your printing limit as well as finding ways to use the computer to enhance your learning.
6. For black and white laser printers:

• There is a page-printing limit of 20 pages per student per day.

7. For the color laser printer:

• Students must show the ACC staff a printed college assignment that requests color printing.
• Students must also show the ACC staff a black and white copy of their finished work before color printing can be started to assure the student’s color print will print correctly.
• There is a limit of 5 color prints per day per student.

L. Using the scanners

1. There are several scanning stations set up for IBM compatible and Macintosh computers.
2. The scanners are to be used for college assignments only.
3. Students using the scanning stations to complete scanning assignments have priority over those students who are working on non-scanning assignments.
4. The instructional staff will provide a 5-minute introduction to the scanner for students using the Center. The student may also wish to take the 2 hour Basic Scanning Course offered by the ACC. Check the ACC Web site for days and times. It is the responsibility of the student’s instructor to teach any additional features of the scanner that are needed.
