Getting Started

  1. What the Class is About

    1. You are going to make a colorful E-Portfolio (electronic portfolio) in Microsoft PowerPoint that will include your cover letter, objective, personal statement, resume, sample work and more. You will be able to enhance these items using multimedia elements such as audio, graphics, and video. The class is not intended to be a traditional resume creation class!

    2. If you have created items such as spreadsheets, art work, graphics, photographs, music, poems, research papers and so forth, they can be included as part of your sample work. Also, any awards or certificates can be included. Everything must help achieve your objective of obtaining the employment you want.

    3. You will burn your E-Portfolio on a CD-R.

    4. The CD, along with a coordinated paper resume, can then be sent to a prospective employer(s) whose computer meets these requirements: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP and a set of speakers or a headset. The browser must be Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or newer.

    5. Students who produce high quality E-Portfolios will be given the opportunity to have portfolios placed on the web.

    6. You will be able to return to the Santa Ana College Academic Computing Center (ACC) later and make additional copies of your E-Portfolio on a CD-R(s) if you have saved your work on your own Zip disk, and bring blank CD-R’s with you. If you would like to label your CD-ROMs and have CD cases, you will have to purchase those items as well. We will provide the first CD, label and CD case for you.

    7. Students who are sent from counseling or other classes must complete their E-Portfolio, and burn it on a CD-ROM to receive credit.

  2. What to Do First

    1. The Academic Computing Center has developed a categorized list of Web sites called the Web Scout. Under the Career Information section, you will find many helpful areas including a section on Resume Development.

    2. You may want to create a Personal Career Start Page. This page is similar to the "Start Page" you get from Yahoo, Netscape or MSN. However, the "Career Start Page" focuses on items that will enhance your career. Browse the Web sites listed under the ACC Web Scout’s “Creating a Personal Start Page” section for information: http://sacacc.sac.edu/webscout/Career_Information/Create_a_Personal_Career__Start_Page_/
